Because world-building isn't a fun hobby for everybody, as much as I love it myself, and I never know how much detail to write into the narrative without making it as dry as all buggery. It all makes sense in my head, but sadly nobody else has access to that particular database, so. :D; These are things I have been asked along the way.
Who is _ _ _ anyway? :|
Right. The alphanumeric name-codes serve no real purpose, though sometimes they form part of a net user's contact sequence. Most are obvious, though some are not so. Here's who's who:
K17: Kitayama
T41: Fujigaya
Y00: Yokoo
I14: Iida
M15: Miyacchi
74-M: Tamamori
21-K: Nikaido
53-N: Senga
54-N: Sanada
04-A: Nozawa
45-I: Hashimoto
44-R: random archer
T65: a sad geek reference. Archer's superior.
M45: Machida
Y44: Yara
Y03: Yonehana
A41: Akiyama
Why are the Honor Guard different?
Honestly, none of these designations have meaning. I just thought it'd be nice to mark them from the rest in a way. Totsuka is First, Kawai is Second, Tsukada is Third, and Goseki is Fourth -- actually, I used this system for callsigns in my Starseeker fic a while back, and only recently realised that it also happens to be the order in which their names generally appear on clearfiles and things IRL. 8D *kirakira*
How did Nikaido really get his skates?
It's as he tells it: he stole them. From a sleeping guy. ♥ Kitayama got himself an upgrade and so went out with his old ones, took them off and just fell asleep somewhere he knew Nika would be around. Since skates are hellishly expensive, it was practically an open invitation so Nika was like, "Thanksbai <3" and thus became a skater.
Why does Nikaido choose a bunny?
I don't know all the reasons, ahaha. It's been his second skin for a long, long time. He thinks they look cute; they're social creatures; people like to cuddle them; sometimes they get freaked out easily... :D Stuff. He could easily be plenty of other things, but has a natural affinity with the little white furry.
If they're all in this post-apocalyptic whatever, how do they know what guinea pigs (or anything else) are?
They saw whatever it was in a scenario sometime or something... :D *VAGUE* For example, at Senga's school, they may have had a guinea pig in his classroom scenario. 8D Who knows. xD Scenarios of the past are popular; those idyllic days~
Why do they have to physically go to school if everything's online?
*bullshits* 8D Well, the Capital system requires you to pay a high price for everything, including having kids and schooling kids. Since schooling is mandatory, the official curriculum is kept on a local server so it can't be hacked from outside.
What happened to Senga's family?
Senga doesn't remember his parents, and doesn't really know this story either: the Senga family was pretty well-to-do but got caught aiding shady people who may or may not have been Takizawa. Only wee Senga escaped, and Tackey adopted him. As such, Senga joined much younger than any of the other boys; unlike them he was never a street rat and has been online since forever.
What about Kitamitsu?
Kitayama was a street rat who grew up outside of Takizawa's jurisdiction. He found out about the cause and wanted in, joining when he was old enough to know what he was getting into. He never went to school, but isn't academically stupid for reasons yet undisclosed (which are also why he sleeps a lot incidentally). I'll sidestory it one day. Why does this boy have the fullest backstory of them all? Pfft.
Tama has a grandfather? How did that happen if his parents abandoned him? Why doesn't he just live with his grandfather then?
Grandpa!Tama is the reason why Tamamori, like Senga, has been online from a young age and doesn't give off the street rat vibes much. The man is a government agent like Miyata, and the reason Tamamori doesn't hate the government more than he does (which is a fair bit actually, but only the system, not necessarily the people in it). Grandpa!Tama discovered that Tamamori had avoided termination and sekritly harboured him while he was small. Tamamori left as soon as he was old enough though, since, being illegal, he didn't want to be a burden. Grandpa!Tama would've been in big trouble if caught. ♥ But they're still close even if they don't see each other that often these days.
What's a rush junkie?
Nobody's actually asked this, but I feel like explaining anyway. 8D It's one of a few things that's mentioned only once in passing (Nika said Tama was too clean to be one), but I have fleshed it out a lot in my head. :D A rush junkie is an adrenaline addict. Adrenaline highs are a cheap kind of drug abuse if you have net access, but as with anything they're not a problem until they become one. Miyata's supervisor probably has a minor addiction actually, lol. ♥
You came up with this world yourself? Inspiration?
Yes, I did. Sure, it rips off the basics of every other semi-cyberpunk/sci-fi/pseudo-dystopian thing ever, but this particular scenario is my brainchild. 8D As for inspiration... I don't read a lot, so these will be specific:
1- Tom Clancy's
Net Force Explorers is where the VR system sort of came from. I think I only read two or three of them about ten years ago, but Leif Anderson was my hero.
2- Matthew Reily's Scarecrow series (Ice Station, Area 7, and Scarecrow) is where the hook (
Armalite MH-12 Maghook in his books) came from. "In effect, the Maghook is a gun, a compact, two-handed launcher that fires a grappling hook from its muzzle at tremendous speed [and] also contains a high-powered magnet for adhesion to sheer metallic surfaces." The bunnyfic!hook is shot from a pistol, the grapple smaller though no weaker, and its pianowire can theoretically cut.
3-
Crossed Wires is practically the only WIP I follow (huuuge sadface). It's a Naruto cyberpunk AU, and has, I swear, the best rendition of an AI ever. Not that I read a lot of those, but even if I did I doubt much could top that Sasuke. The fic itself is also amazing, if still unfinished. You should read it. <-applies even if you don't know a thing about Naruto (or hate it ♥).
4- Also,
Open Your Eyes at
abscondpress is what made me AHAHA, SKATES ages ago. It's another cyberpunk AU, but Arashi. 8Db
5- Last but not least, there are Star Wars references threaded through the whole thing. The skates' repulsor/tractor technology in particular is from that universe. (Their reactors are more of the kind from Iron Man though, in my head.)
Anything else, loopholes, curiosities, inconsistencies, descriptions etc., please give me a heads-up and I'll do my best to cover up and pretend it never happened answer. |D
