OK, lets talk about today's Merlin!
OH COLIIIIIIIIIIIIIIN!!! Colin Morgan can do anything! I love him! Wow for srs. Also, Gaius' "I'm awake" face? PRICELESS!! And Anthony Head is amazing even when he's asleep the whole episode. BASICALLY I LOVE EVERYONE ON THIS SHOW.
Ok, so my big beef with the episode is HOW IN THE HELL IS THE MAGIC STILL A SECRET? Merlin did a spell with Arthur standing right in front of him, practically shouted it in his ear! I do feel like its a little early for Arthur to find out in the show, but a situation like that is hard to ignore. Really writers/scene blockers? You couldn't get them out of there ANY other way?
And I thought FOR SURE that Morgana was gonna find out this episode. I mean, I thought he should have just told her back in episode 4, and maybe all of this could have been avoided, but after all that and she still doesn't know? OMG YOU GUYS. Plus, now the "Morgana finds out and goes apeshit" scene won't likely happen, which I wanted to see. Like, Merlin, you've done some shit to that girl, get ready for the consequences.
I'm sort of fascinated with the idea of a self-fulfilling prophecy with this series. I mean, I think its pretty obvious that the show isn't really going to mess with the bulk of the legend, and as a prequel they won't really change the outcome of anything that we already know will happen, but they do such a good job of teasing us with the idea of fixing it all NOW. But for all the warnings and stuff, all they do is push everyone toward that inevitable outcome. "Oh, kill Mordred, let Uther die, Morgana can't know about her powers, no wait, kill her, too." Yet clearly, none of that advice gets followed. Merlin did actually attempt to kill Morgana today (I still almost can't believe it), but then he saved her by bargaining with Morgause. And the catch is, now Morgana KNOWS that Merlin tried to kill her, but not why. If that weren't true, would she become so evil? Would she turn on them so easily? Like, I almost wish back in episode 4 that Merlin had said to Morgana "hey, look, I'm magic, too, and I've been talking to this dragon and he says you're gonna be evil. Don't do that, okay?" maybe it would have all been alright. Of course they couldn't do that, but it seems like everything they HAVE done has been on the road of bad decisions.
Also, last weeks episode gave me the distinct impression that when Merlin looked into the crystal, he could tell that freeing the dragon would bring a shit-storm to Camelot. I thought it was really obvious what the crystal was showing him because it was really obvious to us the viewers, and I like to think that Merlin is as smart as we are. And yet, he frees the dragon anyway. Seems like it would be better to have everyone sleep forever than be torched by dragon. Plus, why is the dragon going on a rampage anyway? Won't that like, affect the magical future kingdom of King Arthur that he kept prattling on about all this time? I miss Slash Dragon, now he just seems like Stupid Dragon. BAD DECISIONS, GAH!
Ok, done now.
