It's all the more unusual given how interwoven all the other plot threads are: Vorenus' family problems send him to Egypt with Antony, who's been banished by Octavian, who retains Pullo's loyalty, and Pullo gets the incentive to leave when Gaia dies. You have all these people affecting each other in deep (and not always deliberate) ways, and then you have Timon, who... well, really, he had that glimmer of "redemption" after the Servilia thing, and that's pretty much it. His storyline didn't intersect with anyone else's, and in the final analysis he didn't contribute much of anything. Which, in turn, makes me wonder if it was a colossal waste of time after all.
It does seem odd... I guess it's possible they were planning on bringing him in during the Egyptian arc, only to reailze at the last minute that there was no room.
