013: Picnic

Catharine was downstairs doing laundry when the phone rang.  Geoffrey didn’t think twice about answering it.  He snagged the receiver off the hook and pressed it to his ear.

“Hello?”  It was her mother.  “Yes, she’s here.”  Why isn’t she answering the phone?  “She’s downstairs.”  Have her call me.  “I’ll have her call you.”  Good.  I have a proposal for her.  “I’ll let her know.”  Hmph.  “You have a nice day, Mrs. Scott.

He set the phone down.  A second later, Catharine came through the door.

“Hey, baby, your mom called.”

“Oh.”

“You sound excited.”

“I’m not.”

She dropped her laundry basket on the couch and started folding clothes.  He sat down beside her and reached out to help.

“Something wrong?”

Catharine sighed.  “She keeps trying to set me up with some guy at her church.  He’s, like, a million years old and rude.”

“Oh?”  Geoffrey wondered if those were the only two… redeeming qualities the guy had.  Geoffrey was a couple of years older than her, himself, and-he didn’t like to brag-he could throw down with the best of them.

“First it was the church picnic.  Then it was the fall social, then Thanksgiving, then Christmas, then New Year’s.  Now she’s going for the winter social,” Catharine explained.  “The guy’s a doctor.  That’s all I can figure.  He’s not even nice to look at.”

“Has she forgotten we’re dating?” Geoffrey asked, carefully avoiding her panties.

“No.”

“Cathy?”

“You can fold my panties.  You take them off all the time.”

“Cathy.”  He relented, though, and folded the things.

“She says you’re not marriage material.”

Geoffrey was silent for a long moment.  Catharine wasn’t sure how to take that.

“Not marriage material?”

“That’s right.”

He bit his lip.  “She knows we’ve only been dating for a little over two months, right?  What do you think?”

She quirked an eyebrow.  “I think it’s a little too soon.  Give it time.”

He sighed.  She folded the last of her clothes and leaned over to kiss him.
