He held her when she fought with her parents. He backed her when she argued with half the world. He held her hand when she heard from her ex.
What was he supposed to do when she argued with him?
She’d left angry an hour ago. He’d tried calling, tried calling her mother. Her mother answered, but hadn’t heard from Catharine. The news had reported a wreck involving a car that looked a lot like hers and a drunk man in a truck.
He was holding the phone in one hand, afraid to dial the hospital’s number. Afraid it just might have been her.
He released the cut off switch on the cradle and held it to his ear when it rang.
“Hello?”
It was her. She was crying. Could he come pick her up from the hospital? Her car was totaled.
Geoffrey dropped the receiver and ran out of his apartment, not hearing the angry buzz, and failing to lock the door.
