It must have been the artist’s eyes. She would see things he would miss. Reveled in the things he wouldn’t even pay attention to. Took her time and sifted through and really looked at everything.
Victor was a little jealous. He’d tried to do what she did, but all he saw was impatience. Where she saw beauty, he saw landscaping. Where she saw poetry, he saw rocks.
Where he saw an amphibious vehicle, she saw a frog.
He couldn’t understand why she stayed. Why she slept in his bed, wore his ring, bore his child. Why she wrapped her arms around him and whispered tender little things in his ear.
A whispered, “I love you,” with chest heaving. A soft smile for no reason at all. Quick touches in the hall or long touches after dark.
He never asked why. He never tried to delve. In a thousand ways it wasn’t worth it and in a thousand more it was too frightening to think about.
Janet smiled at him and brought his head down for a kiss. He found himself slipping his tongue into her mouth. Pressed against her and held her to him. She sighed. His heart pounded.
Janet pulled away and grinned at him. She took off into the house. He watched her go and brushed his fingers thoughtfully over his lips. Then scrambled to answer the phone when it rang.
