Ian as a young man, at work. He was a clicker, which is the person who cuts out the leather for shoe-uppers. You can see the rolled hides on the shelves in the background, and he always had a ready supply of leather scraps for us kids' craft projects. His workshop where he'd sometimes bring work home smelt fantastic.
I would guess that this photo was taken around about 1960-65, judging from his apparent age here. I don't know why this photo was taken, but I think the photographer knew what he was doing. The scan doesn't really do it justice.
