Two interesting news stories that caught my attention this morning:

Finally after 8 years of the ban, Obama is reversing Bush's policy and will allow federal money to go to embryonic stem-cell research. This couldn't have come soon enough.

1) Good, but still I don't understand why does federal gov't spend money on research that eventually will make tons of money for private businesses?

2) FML, new wave of contracts...

Even though a lot of research is conducted by private companies, many of them ask for and receive grants from the government that helps them fund the research. So, in the past 8 years, the funding for the stem-cell research was just unavailable, and not many labs and scientists could conduct as much research as they wanted.
