The sense of smell is very underrated as a source for triggering memories. Some of my strongest memories have been brought on by specific smells. You're right, it *does* take you right back to that moment.
I always find it fascinating how smell, color, sound, how it's all so interrelated and anyone of them can trigger a memory at anytime. I love the smell when it's (as I call it) "trying to rain." When the sky is overcast and the air is heavy with moisture and it has that "just before it rains" smell. (It stinks here in El Paso after it rains, at least inthe summer. Because it's so hot that the water is evaporating immediately and you can smell all the dust.) But sometimes when it gets that "trying to rain smell," I'm reminded of Virginia, where it rained more often. The "trying to snow" smell is similar, but a bit more crisp, and a lot more seldom

I totally know what you mean. I tend to associate smells with things that don't, strictly speaking, have smells--like summer, or like a certain book, or a certain time in my life. And today really had that summery smell.
Ooh, I had one of those moments a while ago - it was all sunny out and smelled of summer and ... it smelled Brighton. And I was reminded that a year ago that date, I was in England and had just met Liz. :)
I also had a somewhat weirder experience - I passed someone in the street, who smelled like once of my favourite CDs. :P I hadn't realised the CD smelled at all, until I passed that guy and there was a smell I couldn't quite place until the CD popped up in my mind. Heh.
I absolutely know what you mean. The last olfactory memory I had was of high school band camp. For some reason, a certain number of smells combined to make Eau de Sevier Hall (the dorm where we stayed at Austin Peay State University for band camp every year). I could almost hear the percussion warming up in the courtyard.
