I probably won't be online much more before I leave for Florence, so I might as well post now while I have the chance. I'm off to the airport tomorrow night, and then after that I'll have access a 24-hour computer lab in my dorm, so don't get your hopes up -- you haven't seen the last of me for the next six weeks ( Read more... )

Hmm. I voted, but I think that the best answer is a nickname =) Eleuthera is a great name, but as you are certainly aware it's difficult to say no matter how you do it!

The first thing that jumped to mind was Ra, but that has too much context (and is male anyway!). Naturally Isis came next, which also has too much context. Then came Thoth, which not only isn't pretty but is also male despite otherwise good context (creator of language). So I quit that line of reasoning. Looth sounds far too coarse. Elle perhaps? or Rasa? You must already have a nickname. No way can you have a name as difficult to say as Eleuthera and not get a ton of nicknames =)

Okay, on the first question I voted for number one, and then realized that the pronunciation isn't quite right-- I don't run the "thera" part together like that. So I'd say the most natural pronunciation for me is more like "Eh-LOO-theh-ra." Yeah.

Can't I just call you Lu?

*silently thanks parents for giving her a nice, prounouncable name like "Emily", even though some people pronounce it "Em'ly", which is actually starting to get on her nerves*

First of all, I don't think I ever told you this but your name is so beautiful.

As I said, I pronounce it Eh-leh-uh-THEH-rah. It's unnatural for me to pronounce a u as oo. In Icelandic u is pronounced uh (ú, on the other hand, is pronounced oo).

If I was to pronounce in an English/American manner, I'd pronounce it Eh-loo-THEH-ra.

I've always pronounced it "Eh-LOO-theh-ra." The others sound kind of...forced? But probably because I'm not used to them.

Your name seems like it's got lots of potential for nicknames, if you want to look for variety that way too.

Have fun in Florence!

In dutch, 'eu' is actually a single sound, and it sounds more or less like the german O-umlaut, and rhymes with the french "dieu", and 'th' sounds just like 't', and the third syllable would be stressed, the dutch 'e' sounds like the english 'a', so it would be a-leu-TEH-ra.

For the second question, it comes pretty close to the "eh-le-oo-TEH-ra" you mentioned (with the two-vowel-sound for 'eu'), only because the 'u' sounds differently in dutch (more or less like in french, e.g.'du'), it would be "a-lay-u-TEH-ra".
