Italy

Well, just got back from Italy. Was an experience unlike anything I've ever done before. My mom and I traveled with a group of 16 women (including us) and roamed Tuscany and Umbria with a last stop in Rome before leaving. It was a wonderful and refreshing two weeks ( Read more... )

Sounds like you had a wonderful time. I wish that I could take a vacation like that sometime. I'd love to see maybe Ireland or Germany or something like that but I guess I'd even settle for anything European.
I bet it's a whole different world over there.
The thing that would overwhelm me the most is the history. Specifically, walking on land knowing that long-forgotten people hundreds of thousands of years earlier walked that same spot, probably with similar hopes and dreams as mine. That would totally spook me and make me feel so mortal. Yikes! Here, everything is still so new.
Makes sense to be relived and sad to be back to the same old work grind again. For the longest time, the past few months at least, you had something to look forward to. That's one of the best parts about a vacation...waiting for it to begin and having something to look forward to. So now maybe you need to plan something else! :)

Welcome to the travel bug my dear Anj :)
I've known so many people with it!
Most people get over it in a few months, some people don't. Those that don't spend the rest of their lives traveling.. anything between is just saving cash to travel again.

Italy would be OMG to go and see, I'm a sucker for history just like Cindy by the sounds.

I didn't see any mention of Pat in that thar post.. hope everything is ok :)

edit: Time away can also give us a more clear sense of where we're at. Sadly its difficult to tell if its just a 'travel bug' unease or a genuine fresh look at our situation.

Though in all honesty, you sound like you've not been happy with your job or location for a while (since I heard last!).

Ooh, Italy. Haven't been there. I really should go there some time.
Sounds like you enjoyed your stay, in spite of timing it prefectly with crazy heat southern Europe's had lately. I know I wouldn't venture outside in heat like that. I can't deal with heat very well.

I suppose if I were american that history would be one of the biggest reasons for me to go to europe. Looking at a building and knowing it's been standing there for several times longer than your own country must be an experience if you haven't encountered much of it before.

Also, I'm almost embarassed that the two ladies have replied and I'm the first one to ask if you did any good shopping? ;)

The shopping was positively the second best thing!!! (history being the first). I got to go to a purse shop where the shopkeeper was in the back actually SEWING the purses he was selling. I have never seen anything like it, most shops were like that. Most of the liquor was made by the local monks of each town, the bread the local shopkeeper...etc etc. Little independent businesses.
The only downside was the exchange rate on the dollar vs the euro right now. If something was 30E, it was $40 for me. Not used to things being expensive. A bottle of water was 1E, which is like 1.50 for me...that's a lot for freaking 12oz. LOL! What can I say, it was 33-36 degrees celsius everyday, and we walked an average of 5 miles a day on little winding mountain cobblestone roads...we drank A LOT of water. hehe.
