Mormon Resignation Update

Jan 14, 2009 01:44

About a month ago I finally mailed in a formal letter resigning my membership in the Mormon church.

A week ago, I received a reply back from the central Member Records division, claiming that they couldn't handle my request, and that they would forward it to the bishop of the local ward that they believe I belong to. Yesterday morning, I sent a letter back explaining why this is both unnecessary and inappropriate.

Yesterday, after having just mailed that letter, I came home to find another letter in my mailbox from said local bishop (who actually lives just a few hundred yards from me, in the same condo complex) claiming that they will grant my name removal request, but only after a 30 day waiting period. This kind of delay tactic is standard practice.

I'll be curious to see what happens when the central records division gets my next letter.

The Mormon No More website has a very helpful and informative guide to the resignation process. So far everything is unfolding exactly as they predicted. It's kind of sad and pathetic, really.
