I think alot of it IS history. They're what, the second oldest "democracy" around, and their culture hasn't been shaken up TOO much compared to most of the rest of the world even before then. Just the World Wars radically shifted much of mainland Europe, Russia and Asia in recent times. I feel like England also really had the privilege of creating modernity. Yeah the other colonial powers had some influence, but England obviously won the culture wars around the world. Now that the US has been around for so long without much tragedy and turmoil on its soil, we're starting to take thing over. It's hard to spawn good artists if your culture is fighting for its life, or is weighed down by excessive poverty.
