I keep hearing government officials saying that no one could have predicted that the levees would break, once again lying through their teeth to the American people - scientists and engineers had been predicting for years that if a storm with strength of Katrina hit the area, that is exactly what would happen. As a matter of fact, in 2004 a story ( Read more... )

i went to dinner at a semi-fancy place on friday, and to my left there was a table of rich white older men (i.e. republicans) bitching about how "this never would have happened" if "louisiana had stepped up and fixed the levees."

uhm, right. except that the chimpanzee in office vetoed funding for the fix.

Yeah, I don't understand this. On the news all day on Sunday they said "worst case scenario, NO is 25 feet underwater." Because it would probably break the levees. Now it wasn't predicted? wutev

Oh, I'm fine. Volunteered and donated yesterday, but the shelter I was at was pretty tame. As many volunteers as refuges there. Finally was able to get gas and groceries yesterday. People are nervous with crime in areas around Baton Rouge and every other person has lost their home. They estimate BR has doubled in population. Helicopters, caravans of buses and trucks carrying boats. These are interesting but tense times and I am like a sponge to it all. I am pretty drained with little brain power left to analyze the situation.

Why bother lying? It wasn't news to anyone that this was not only a possibility, but a likelihood. To be honest, even with the funding this storm or one like it could have had the same effect--they've been predicting it for 40 years. But even so, it's inexcusable not to have continued to try to do something about it. It always would have been a losing battle, but to not at least address evacuation? To cut funding? Insane. Infuriating. Par for the course.

With that knowledge, and the knowledge that the majority of the city's population lives in poverty and would have no means of evacuation, there is no reason why there could not have been prior arrangements made with bus compamies to get these people out, you know

It's such a crock, it's obscene. I'm guessing the article was about "Hurricane Pam"?
