I agree with this so much! Especially as you get older and leave school behind, it gets harder and harder to make friends. People told me the app Bumble could be good for finding friends, but I am finding that people use it more for dating.
In school it seemed like it was so much easier to go up to someone with a blue folder and be like "Hey! I like blue, too! Let's be friends! :P" Grownups don't act like that. :/
I love the idea of a personal's ad to find friends. Mine would probably be, "Looking for someone to see the movie adaptation of a book I just read. Must have also read the book and be willing to discuss how the movie completely botched the story."
Hahaha! I can completely see why it would be nice to have that as a social convention, for much the same reason. Someone should start a FriendForNow app, that pairs you up on a given day based on co-interest in certain activities.
I did once come across an app that did exactly this, kinda. Well, it was about sharing a meal together, great for if you're in a new city or just want a companion for an afternoon. Friendship based, NOT a dating site, and it was women-only for that reason. You could either look around when you were getting hungry and say "where is there someone cool to eat with right now?", or you could say "I want to go to xyz place, let's set a time to do that".
Unfortunately, at the time I encountered an article about this, I didn't have a smartphone, and thus the name of it passes me by... but it is out there! (If you ever encounter it or something similar again, please let me know!)
When I first moved to town, I was part of a networking group that would pair you with three other people for a lunch "date" once a week. I met some cool people, but it was every Thursday, and I'm just not social enough to commit to meeting 3 new people every Thursday, so I would cancel every other week or three out of every four weeks. Eventually, I just opted out.
Thanks for taking the time to read and comment! :)
People generally give me anxiety and I try to avoid social interactions as much as possible.
This is me. So very much me.
Also, there really needs to be a site (or newspaper) for something like that. Everywhere that I know of that exists is mostly people looking to do the whole "sex without strings" thing. I just want to go drink copious amounts of coffee, browse the bookstore, then head to the library!
Right? I've got a boyfriend, and goodness knows I don't need more than one of those, so I just don't think the "friends" apps out there would work so well for me. We should all just write to the papers demanding a section in the classifieds!
