Theresa May? Theresa Fucking May? Seriously, I've known for six hours and still can't get my head round it. For those who are out of the loop (or living in other countries), David Cameron has appointed an openly homophobic and generally regressive female politician as Minister for Women and Equality. Usually one of the prerequisites for this kind ( Read more... )

Was she the one who tried to cure homosexuals through prayer? That's about as appropriate as having Nick Griffin as the Minister for Tolerance.

Incidentally, I forgot to mention that one of my favourite moments of the election night was the photo of him boldly captioned "BARKING".

In other news, Lord Archer is the new Minister for Truth.

(Theresa May, MP for where I live, isn't the pray vs. teh gay one, but she voted against raising the age of consent and missed the section 28 vote).

She has however voted quite strongly against gay adoption (and allowing unmarried heterosexual couples to adopt) and for restricting fertility treatment to certain family situations. She's also a pro-lifer, and from what I can tell, voted against a lot of clauses on the current hate crimes legislation, but I haven't been able to find details on exactly which bits she objected to, so I'm not denouncing her on that one yet just in case.

The Pray Away The Gay woman didn't win her seat, but this is a small victory, because she is allegedly one of several Tory MPs with similar views.

These will be our Bush years. Well at least it got people politicised.

It all makes me wish I were back in Edinburgh and not the most Tory saturated area on the country.

Yep, a whole 4 posts for women.

I only counted 3 on the BBC list, but I may have just skipped over the Wales one.

When I initially typed this rant out, only one female cabinet member had been announced, so time of going to press, etc. I already know Sayeeda Warsi's record - she was on Question Time on the same night as Nick Griffin, and I thought she was a positive addition to the panel right up until she opened her mouth.

It's good to see that this exists, but I'm vaguely put off from signing it because of the crawly tone of it and the fact that it implies Theresa May has done great things for women's rights, when I've never seen any evidence of her having done much for women who aren't Theresa May. This sound like an excessive amount of vitriol to heap on a brave attempt at talking back to the government, but I'm not in the mood for "conciliatory" at the moment.
