makes me think about "gringo" which here in South America has almost no negative connotations. In fact many places it means "a person not from around here" like when you get to smaller towns. My Argentine roommate was often called gringa in Brazil.

I don't like getting called gringa though because of the "otherness" that it implies. Also, the girls-gone-wild study abroad groups make me cringe when I'm lumped in with them.

Gringo is similar here, too, though usually implies European or American...I wouldn't think a South American or Caribean would be called gringo ( ... )

Oh, the center and left are really pretty clear about it, in Chile and Argentina at least. On the other hand,to the right side of the political spectrum there is a blatant admiration for that fucking, and many would like to emulate in fucking over whatever unfortunate little guy gets in the way..
