So, I get that he lied and everything, and that's really bad, but does it make his work any worse? Or any less compelling? If it changed lives or whatever (I haven't read it or seen either Oprah show) that is still good. Did everyone already say what I'm saying? haha. He's just a chode - was his second book good?
His book is fantastically entertaining, but it's so fucking horribly written. The man cannot write for shit. "A Million Little Pieces" reads like one long, extended Village Voice article that was typed up on a whim after a weekend of freebasing. Or, more aptly, the product of someone who spent far too much time reading Hubert Selby Jr. in an attempt to ape his style right out from under him
( ... )
Okay...well, you usually think everything is way suckier than I do, so...it sounds like utter crap. hehehe. If his first one was just entertaining (and what freebasing weekend isn't? haha.) why did Oprah... Oh, nevermind. If he's a bad writer and a douchetard, what can I say? I thought his writing was good since oprah was raving or whatever. Glad I never read that.
I enjoyed the both books but I approached both of them as fiction. What Dissy said below is true, though. He does trash recovery programs by giving people the idea that they can just wing it and go cold turkey. That scene in the first book where he goes to a bar and hold a glass full of whiskey in his hands? Insane. His books make me think I should write a book about some of the characters I've met in my lifetime. For some reason, this morning I was thinking about a guy I once worked with who was suffocated by his own pet snake. Tell me I couldn't make a good character out of that poor bastard. So as far as doing people any good by reading the book, I really don't know about that. I must say that I really liked the Leonard character. I wonder now if he was even real.
