THE ONE I GOT
Canon: The Girl Who Owned a City
Author: OT Nelson
Fic: Parthogenesis
Status: FREAKING AMAZING.

I am probably the only person other than the author in yuletide who has read this canon but SERIOUSLY DO NOT LET THAT STOP YOU FROM READING THIS FIC. The background to the canon is that everyone over the age of 13 has died and a girl figured out that they should build a city in the local high school. This works out remarkably well, for a canon that likes to bring logical consequences to bear-in canon there is starvation, and war, and putrescence, and disease.

My author did a faaaaaaabulous job further outlining the logical consequences of having no doctors, and having the doctor you do have (JILL WHO IS FREAKING AWESOME) learning her medical information from fantasy novels and highschool textbooks. The author digs into the culture of the school-city with glimpses of one of the other girls teaching history in a way that is only broadly the same as what we know (Thomas Jefferson freed America and then they had hot dogs!) and takes on the air of myth. The style of the fic-being pulled along by the definitions of medical words-lends the air of urgency to Jill’s quest.

This fic made me cry, once, because medical realism is medical realism and sometimes people die even when you tell them not to and my heart hurts for Jill as she can’t help but blame herself for not knowing more.

ALSO OH MY GOSH THE AUTHOR REFERENCES THIS POSTER WHICH I ALMOST BOUGHT LAST WEEK but ended up misering out of. I KIND OF HAD A HAPPY HEART ATTACK WHEN I SAW THE REFERENCE.

And there is CRAIG in the fic and not all that much of him but HE IS SO AWESOME HE IS LIKE AWESOME FLAVORING and there are apples and now I want to reread this canon so bad so so so so so bad.
