The Dark Is Rising
http://archiveofourown.org/collections/yuletide2009/works/33015“>Three from the Track This is a pre-canon look into Merriman and the Drews. It is a fascinating character-piece that has Merriman being truly the beloved Gumerry, while dissecting the reasons he is continually called back to the safe haven of the family he has let adopt him for a time. I love the little comments that glimpse insight into his relationship with Mrs. Drew, and that Dr. Drew finds him a little weird. I love that Simon thinks of him as the source of stories to scary Jane with, and that Jane adores Merriman and is terrified by him all at the same time. And tiny Barney who, as always, sees more than he’s supposed to, and is young enough to easily accept it as that being who his great uncle Merriman is, brings something very important to light in Merriman’s mind. I love that he is an old man, and an Old One, and how he his interests as an academic and a warrior for the Light cross.
I also imagine the sandwich he is eating at the beginning is PB&J, or Nutella, or something else simple and home-y and gradeschool. Because you’ve got to agree, Merriman Lyon eating PB&J while surrounded by small children is amaaaaaaazing *_*.
FOR THE OTHER SIDE OF THE SPECTRUM there is
Loving Bonds, which focuses on Blodwen Rowlands, pre-canon. It is a fascinating look into her as a human and as Rider of the Dark, and how much the former has subsumed the latter during this time (right after Bran has been born). Her love of John, and her intense hatred of the Light are contradictions that are woven seamlessly together-which is to say, there are seams (large ones) but she notices them and they bother her. The author has convinced me to feel a deep pity for the woman Blodwen Rowlands could have been, if she had not sold herself to the other side. It has also endeared me forever to John Rowlands, who unconciously won the love of one of the most dangerous/evil people in the world almost solely through thinking of her as good.
I love that Blodwen hates that she feels like John can’t hear her when she speaks, and that it goes much, much deeper than simple miscommunication. I love that this is a husband and wife who love each other, but in the end have as much capability for understanding each other as a starfish and a hawk.

http://archiveofourown.org/collections/yuletide2009/works/34070“> thou fond deceiver is an interesting piece, almost completely because I usually hate fic in which Bran actually starts to remember. It is so very hard to do well. However, this really does ring true to me-I love Bran’s distance, and his massive amount of interior consideration of what’s going on. I love that he has no idea why he remembers what he remembers, or what it means. I love that he occasionally says things, not things he remembers but just random things, and it isn’t until Will reacts weirdly to them that he starts to re-think what could have caused the reaction. I love that Will’s family embarasses him *_* (oh families!) and I love that Bran is utterly confused by the chaos that is a Stanton Christmas.
I love that in the end, Will is honest with Bran. Honesty comes so hard to Will, in these things, and you can see it in the fic-I think sometimes that comes too easily in other stories, and it makes me want to hug Will but also cheer him for his bravery!
Basically what I mean to say is: \o/!
Lord Peter Wimsey/Doctor Who
http://archiveofourown.org/collections/yuletide2009/works/34707 WARNING: THIS STORY IS FREAKING HUGE. Also awesome!!!! I really, really love it. Basically, it’s about Peter Wimsey in the trenches. Except it’s also about Jack Harkness in the trenches. Except it’s also about alien planets. Except it’s also about Roman legions. Except it’s also about Mervyn Bunter being kickass. Except it’s also about Time Lord politics. Except it’s also about the never-ending cycle of peace and war. Except it’s also about identity. Except it’s also about viewing other people as people, not tools or corpses or objects of revenge.
I love it so much, in all of its weirdness. Also, as far as I can tell the German is stellar!!!
