So, first let me say that I love Rent. It's a wonderful, moving story about a group of young people forming their own family and sticking to their ideals and their independent lifestyle while living with debilitating disease

It has nothing to do with being a republican, democrats pay rent too. It has everything to do with being an adult! This is real life, not some Disney fairy tale!
I respect people that chose a career knowing that it won't pay the big bucks, lots of people do it all the time. However, it's not selling out to actually want to have a roof over your head and food on your plate - and affording to pay for it your damned self.
I've never watched the show, but from what you describe it's doing a dis-service to artists. Not all artists are bums that want to leach off of the fruits of someone else's labor. And there are plenty of non-artists that are bums like that. That kind of attitude gives artists a bad reputation.

That friend that they hate is enabling them. Let's see how well they do when they're homeless.
