Newest chapter of
Otoyomegatari is about embroidery and trousseau.
There's a character I really like, because she's so hotheaded and rebellious.
I can feel her pain XDDD
My childhood was all about embroidery, embroidery, embroidery and marriage.
My mother forced me to cross-stitch a big prayer-rug. I was on the brink of crying everytime my mother placed that piece of fabric in my hands, because cross-stitching is dull and stupefying. Crochet is even worse than that.
A turkish woman has to fill 1-2 big cartons with this stuff to be a worthy bride, that's why everyone has to start at a very young age.
God damnit, at that age I rather wanted to run around on a playground, play hide and seek with the other kids and not sit at home and kill my mind with this stuff.
Found out later on, that you can buy them *lol* no need to waste precious time with dull handiwork.
Uuh, but that chapter makes me realize that this handiwork is just another way of art. It's part of the culture and the patterns have a long running history. Unfortunately, my mother copied many patterns from her friends, because my grandmother didn't teach her many.
And some people, my aunt for example, buy magazines with patterns to try something new, so our own history gets lost. Only our traditional linen pattern remains the same.
Nice quote from the manga:
"They show the social strata and origin of the weaver and tell the content of their character. Cloth with special meaning is particularly meticulously prepared. From the unique patterns passed down from one generation to the next... to the immeasureable amount of time and effort with which they have imbued them with prayers and their feelings. But their attitude is such that this is not a burden to them.
Their needles will move while they chat and they'll spin thread between work. Doing this is simply, to them a natural part of their everyday task.
Or, you could say, this is their way of life."
