Could you only live with the decision to switch to a different career path if you *knew* that you could make it in the publishing business? Would it still be an okay choice if you, as you say in your question 2, couldn't "prove your competence"?
I feel like this is really similar to what I've gone through as a musician deciding whether to "go for it" or not. I understand where you're coming from... it's a big dilemma.
These are huge questions, so don't self-batter yourself too much about "dragging your feet". You need to find certain parts of yourself first before you can make a change like this. Most of all, and as always, follow your heart. What is wonderful about life is the many places it can have us go, places we never expected. Maybe this is a place for you to go. Good luck whatever life path you choose. Oh, and btw, I'm proud of you.
