The Prince Myshkins / Nonsense Company were just here.  That was wonderful, although rushed.  I really surprised myself at my inability to publicize, or maybe the Rice community surprised me with its ability to be extremely busy.  Which I should have expected.  I certainly did expect more composer participation - 4 out of 16 or so is pitiful when I ( Read more... )

Anyone who wasn't at the show has no excuse. I was able to find out about it from Illinois. The eight or however many were there can't undo having been there. The Great Hymn is a sturdy piece. I finally got to see the thing, after having played it in a house theater and in a pre-Nonsense concert in Santa Cruz. It makes a big difference to see it vs perform it and see it vs hear a recording of it. Among many other qualities, it's antiphonal. You'd be doing a boon to catalyze some Rice students to perform it. During the NonCo's dress rehearsal in the basement of UCIMC, there was a lot of discussion of Robert Phillips's piece -- politics, delivery, linguistics -- what was its reception like in Houston? And did they do the new uke/prepared guit/harmonica piece? That's one we missed.
Both your con- and di-vergences sound intriguing. The main problem with self-loathing in my view, aside from not being particularly enjoyable, is it upstages self-annoyance.

Ahh, I'd rather have some self-annoyance any day. Maybe I'll exchange the loathe.

The only Robert Phillips piece they did was the new Hawaiian one. The vocal sounds and steel guitar were especially delicious...

Update: 31-tone spiraling chord progression composed; I'm really annoyed with Kyma's limitations, or my limitations to learn it.
