i finished my trek yesterday at about four, and then went to find a room and slept from six in the evening until this morning at 8. so fourteen hours of sleep later, what do i need to do? uh. repack my bag. get some laundry done. brush my damn teeth. do postcards and stuff. make my hair not stick up. find some nail clippers because i lost mine on ( Read more... )

I'm the regional analyst for political terrorism and violence in Thailand for my internship. As far as I know incidents are mostly limited to the southern regions. Have you had any encounters or brushes or even heard any mentions of the Muslim separatist movement in the south? I'm just curious, because I was wondering how the violence was affecting the flow of tourists, or if they're even aware of it...not you specifically, just people that might have hung out with, etc. Unless you want to talk about you specifically...

It sounds like everything is going well, and I am really jealous. Thailand sounds very cool, and I hope you have a great rest-of-the-trip...

i haven't been in any of the separatist areas, and as far as i know no one i met has either, but i actually am not quite sure where they are. i've been reading the bangkok post and there are quite a few opinion pieces on what the prime minister is doing about the muslim areas, the only areas in which thai rak thai didn't win big, which i'm sure you know. most of the editorials have been talking about his decision to divide the areas into green/yellow/red zones, and distribute money to each accordingly. actually it reminds me a lot of decisions the us government has made, and other governments as well, and as far as it goes i'm against what thaksin is doing. but, i have no say, and i haven't been in the affected areas. the only destinations i hit down south were ko samui and ko pha ngan, which i could get into but i dont really think it necessary. i think most of the people here as tourists aren't paying that much attention, to tell the truth. plus, i just crossed the border yesterday, so thailand is now beyond my experience, so to ( ... )

Yeah, I know exactly what you mean. Thaksin is trying to deny development aid to the areas that hate him? A great way to make friends and make things better ( ... )
