Exposure to UV-rays are usually enough to kill a Methuselah in a matter of minutes. Burning alive is a rather painful way to go. Silver, on the other hand, is not so instantaneous. It acts rather like a very strong poison might to Terran, weakening us significantly; without treatment, it too can be fatal.
