Reading this reminded me of the last time I saw my grandfather. He was a genuinely wonderful man and it was hard to see him deteriorate the way he did...physically fine, but mentally retreating into depression and sadness over the years. He always made an effort to be cheery but it was hard for me, not being able to find the right words.

On our final meeting I brought Joseph in to see him for the first (and only) time. He was around a month old at that point. Things were tough for me at home domestically by this time so I was doubly under the weather when I got there. We didn't stay long, just long enough for him to hold his great-grandson and smile for what felt like the first time in ages. He thanked me for coming. I was surprised because I didn't think he got anything out of me being there, but he did.

It won't be the most enjoyable trip you've ever taken, but it'll be a comfort to you that you made the effort.
