FireFox Extensions

Just as a helpful tip, and to remind myself, here are some of the more useful FireFox extensions I'm using.

1: AdBlock Plus. It lets me block either specific images, or images from whole domains. It's a little better than regular AdBlock. There are config files out there set up to block nasty stuff, but for the most part I use it to block LJ user icons that I find disturbing, or even just ads on Yahoo. Blocking stuff like "http://ad.doubleclick.net/*" nicely blocks a lot of stuff I'll just never see.

2: Flashblock. This does what it says; it blocks Flash. It replaces all flash with a lower-case "f" in a circle, and if you want to see it you can click on the "(f)". It'll allow you to white list domains, so if you wanted YouTube.com to be whitelisted, you can do that. I swear it helps keep places that are Flash ad intensive from being a background of flashy ads, yet I can still choose the sites I want to always see Flash from.

3: LongTitles. You know some places (like http://www.xkcd.com) have very long alt text that FireFox cuts off. This simply displays all of the "alt text" text.

4: Mouse Gestures. This I recently started using because a coworker uses it. It lets me use the right mouse button to do extra things in FireFox, such as "go back" that are annoying to do otherwise. Also, I can right-click and do a diagonal from top-left to bottom right and zoom any image x2. Do it the other way and it shrinks it. You ever have a small image you wanted to zoom in on and didn't want to cut/paste into Irfanview just to look at it? Well, this is my most useful use for this one. There's a lot of other gestures you can do like "Zoom in page".

5: NetCraft Toolbar. This one blocks Phishing webpages. I mostly use this one for reporting phishing webpages that I find in spam. I get a few hits per month. (Not like I'm going to go to my bank from spam and log into a phishers URL, but you never know.)

6: Slashdotter. This very useful helps me read Slashdot! If there's a comment I want to see that's hidden, I click on it and Slashdotter expands it without reloading the page. If you read Slashdot you know what I'm talking about. There's a few other options to set, but I use the default settings. Either way it makes reading http://www.slashdot.org a lot more http://userfriendly.org .

There you have it...those are my extensions! Does anybody have any other suggestions for a good one to use?

Suggested:

1: FasterFox. Tweaks FF performance settings. Also silently preloads links on the page while idle. I'll have to try this one.

2: Download StatusBar. Instead of having an extra download window, just show the status on the statusbar. I'm going to try this one too! I hate having that extra stupid window.

3: TrackMeNot. Makes extra searches in the background to hide your real searches. Hm.

4: LJ Hook. Extra LJ stuff?

Okay, I'm busy now trying out these ones...
