Bored at work, so thought I'd do this... Stolen from
Shaula82 Would you do meth if it was legalized?
No. I have studied Psychopharmacology - it is not a good drug. Frankly, I would rather try heroin. And I'm not intending to try heroin.
Are you for or against abortion?
I am absolutely pro-choice, which is not to say that I will always agree with that choice, but it is nevertheless a choice that should be open to anyone who is in that situation.
Would the United States fall with a woman president?
Hell no. Even if I believed that a woman president would do a worse job than a male one (which frankly is an idea that I find rather ridiculous), I think the United States has shown quite comprehensively that no amount of imcompetence on the part of its president could possibly have any effect on whether the US falls.
Do you believe in the death penalty?
No. I do believe that there are people who based on our current level of medical or psychological science and/or understanding, are currently not able to be helped. In these cases, I can see an argument for ending their life rather than placing a perpetual strain on the system to support someone who cannot be rehabilitated. However, I feel that these people are a VAST minority. Given the right system and approach, I believe that 99% of criminals have the potential to be rehabilitated and to reenter society, and I feel that this should be the emphasis of our justice system.
Do you wish marijuana would be legalized already?
That depends on the context in which "legalised" is used. In minor quantities, marijuana is largely benign. However, used habitually and in large quantities, there is evidence that suggests that marijuana use can lead to psychotic behaviour. That being the case, I believe it would be irresponsible to legalise it. If there was a realistic way to make cigarettes and alcohol illegal, I would support them to.
However, I am not against prohibition. If there was a way to legalise marijuana while maintaining some level of control over its use, or if enough systems were put in place to cope with its abuse, I would support it.
Do you believe in God?
No. Sometimes I wish I did, as I suspect it would make morality a lot easier, but I don't. I do however, have a concept of what God would be if I did believe in one, and that concept of God does not require that I believe in him.
Do you think same sex marriage should be legalized?
Absolutely. I think it is ridiculous that we discriminate based on what is essentially a catholic tradition in a society that is supposedly secular.
Do you think its wrong that so many Hispanics are moving to the USA?
I think this is a horrible question, and I'm not going to answer it in any form. Instead, I'm going to rewrite it how it should be asked: Do you think its wrong that so many people are moving to the USA?
A twelve year old girl has a baby...should she keep it?
That would depend entirely on the situation she is in, and is not something that I would have any right to make a decision on without knowing as much of the context as possible. Maybe. Maybe not.
Should the alcohol age be lowered to 18?
Why the hell would it not be 18 to begin with is what I've never understood.
Assisted suicide is illegal...do you agree?
Again, very difficult, and I suppose it comes down to a consideration of quality of life. If someone can be judged to have essentially no quality of life, then euthanasia is essentially the choice between no life and no life. Even more so, some people's quality of life could be judged to be predominately negative. That is, their pain greatly exceeds the positive aspects of their life. In which case, NOT assisting suicide is essentially akin to torture.
Do you believe in spanking your children?
(Edit: Oops, missed this one. lol)
No, I don't. Research suggests that punishment is a very bad reinforcer of behaviour. Punishment tends to be associated more strongly with the person or object administering the punishment than with the behaviour being punished, and therefore creates a classically conditioned response towards that punisher, with little or no association with the initial behaviour.
In non-psych speak - spanking doesn't work for shit. There is some evidence that isolation can work, and if punishment is required, this should be used (for example, sending them to their room without dinner). Note that if punishment of any kind is used, NO REINFORCEMENT SHOULD BE USED. If you send them to their room, and then give them dinner anyway, it is worse than not punishing them in the first place.
However, positive reinforcement works WAY BETTER THAN BOTH. Kid does good = gets rewarded. Kid does bad=gets NOTHING, which isnt rewarding, and thus that behaviour will not recur.
Can you tell this is something I know a lot about?
Would you burn an American flag for a million dollars?
Hell yes. No offense to american people, if you happen to read this, I know many very very nice american people, but I fundamentally oppose a great deal of what your country does as a nation. But for that much money, I'd burn pretty much anything worth, well, less than a million dollars. Net gain=win.
A mother is declared innocent after murdering her 5 children in a temporary insanity case, do you agree?
Depends on whether she was actually insane or just a good actor, for one. If she is insane, then I don't think she can be fully judged for her actions, and I also believe that the prison system would be absolutely the wrong place to put her, as most likely it would make her WORSE, not better. However, I don't believe that she should go free, but rather that she should be institutionalised until such time as it can be essentially guaranteed that she is no longer susceptible to whatever caused that initial insane act.
Are you afraid others will judge you from reading some of your answers?
Judge away.
