Summary Die's shirt is green and Kaoru realizes he likes life - just the way it is.

Green

The shirt was far too big and far too loose.

But Kaoru loved Die in it, because it softened the sharp, gaunt look of him that lately only seemed to be getting sharper and more gaunt. The shirt was olive green and button up and the sleeves were rolled up so that there was space in between his elbows and the green cotton. It cast shadows over his skin. It made his neck look like the top arch of a tree where the branches began.

Die was sitting in that shirt, on the step of his backdoor, holding half a glass of beer in his hand. His hair was up in a knot, muddy red whisps that were too short slipping down out of it, dirty lines over the pale column of neck.

"You keep staring at me like that and I'm going to get nervous." Die said, without turning to look at him.

For the first time in his life, Kaoru realized as he walked over to the other man, that he was in love with a man. That he was in an adult relationship, that included splitting costs of groceries and switching turns in paying for gas and getting into squabbles about who did or did not do any laundry. They had sex and they went to movies together, Die would mention they should go out to dinner more often and Kaoru was always scolding Die for forgetting his keys. He knew he loved Die, but only fully took in the fact that they were an only average, just like everybody else couple at that moment.

"You're going to get cold." Kaoru said, sitting down next to him, black clothes getting dirty from the dusty pavement. "Gimme." He gestured to the glass of beer. Die handed it over without a word, but he was smiling.

"I'm going to head off to bed in a minute. Do you want me to set the alarm?" And he didn't mention that Kaoru should stop stealing his pillow or that he'd try not to snore, despite not having any control over it. They had fallen into routine, but it was comfortable and it was real and there was no reason to mention it because it was already a given thing that needed no mentioning.

Their knees knocked.

"Are you happy?" Kaoru asked. "With this? With.. us?"

Die gave him a kiss, the kind he rarely gave him because it felt different and they usually kissed the same way because it was easy and they both knew they would like it. It was a touch of lips, deepened immediately out of familiarity, Die's tongue brushing over his. Kaoru kissed back, still holding the cold glass. When it broke, Die wasn't smiling. But he looked calm. Tired. Exactly as he always did.

"Yeah. I know we make our living off of projecting this stupid image of unhappiness and despair and all that shit, but yeah, I'm happy. Can I go to bed now? You ask annoying questions at..." He stopped to glance at his watch. ".. Two-thirty. Two-thirty, god, can I really go to bed now? I'm going to be useless tomorrow."

Die always said that and he never was. Kaoru always asked the worst questions at the worst times, and Die never really minded.

It wasn't until he realized the shirt Die was wearing was actually his, that Kaoru thought life was fine - just the way it was. Even if Die was impatient and was going to lock him outside for the night.

".. Coming."

AN Addressing the issue of Die being so thin lately. Imo, he's one of those people that with even the slightest bit of stress he starts dropping pounds like crazy and has to eat like a pig for months to get it back on. And Kaoru's probably given up fretting now.

And I am taking requests for drabbles of the domestic kind. Make ten requests, I don't care. I write drabbles like you wouldn't believe, but I don't always have enough prompt to write them. So knock yourself out. You ask, I write.

Thanks for reading.
