A/N: it isn't his Birthday here anymore but since it still is for everyone else, I'm technically not late posting this.
“Cheers for the Birthday Boy!” Alvaro says as he raises his glass and the whole table scatters with howls and whistles.
Sergio shyly smiles and Iker slaps his knee under the table.
“How's it feel being a year older?” he asks.
Sergio gives him a knowingly smirk. “No different.”
They're all at the big dinner table, back in Spain celebrating both wins over the week for the Euros and Sergio's 25th birthday before they all have to drive or fly back home.
Everyone is either dead drunk or getting there and Sergio hasn't stopped smiling since the food and wine came out.
This birthday is different among the others, because for once he's celebrating with all his teammates. Not with just his fellow Madridistas, but his fellow La Roja mates, his other heart kept family.
It's also different because Fernando is there, at his side and quietly smiling into his wine as he dumbly listens to Villa rant about his birthdays. He's not saying much at all but Sergio knows why.
Since their reunion, all Fernando's done is run his mouth. During training and breakfast and lunch and dinner(except the bus and plane rides because they all have assigned seats then). When he's brought up things, Sergio has noticed that they all seem well planned, rehearsed. Like he picks out certain topics and hopes that he can keep up with it long enough. He practically clings to Sergio whenever he has the chance and it's only when he has the courage to, which has been unusually a lot this time around. He even brought up the idea for the two of them to take a twitpic, both times.
Sergio finds it utterly adorable that Fernando can't think of anything to say anymore now. That he's run out of ideas.
Sergio knows exactly what he's been trying to do.
“Can I talk to you for a moment?” A voice whispers into Sergio's ear.
Fernando smiles lightly at him now and by the tint of his cheeks, Sergio knows he's a bit tipsy. “Sure.” he replies
He tells the others they'll be right back and they slip into the empty lobby.
Sergio tucks his hands into his pockets, smiling expectantly at him. Fernando shifts on his feet, smiling down at the floor.
Sergio knows exactly what he's trying to do.
“I've had a good time, other than the last.” he mumbles. “I hope you had the s-same.”
Sergio humbly adores him for a moment. The way he's biting his bottom lip and pulling loose strings off his cardigan, the way he's hesitantly approaching what he's been trying to do for years.
“I have. It's been a lovely time.” Sergio says, trying to hold back a daring smile. “Fer, look up and tell me why you pulled me out here.”
Fernando's eyes flutter up to his, lock there with nerves and fear.
“I brought you out here...to give you your gift.”
“Okay. Where is it?”
Fernando smiles. “You have to close your eyes to get it.”
Sergio plays along and closes his eyes.
There's a moment and he can hear Fernando getting closer, breathing harsher, frightened like a mouse. He feels his warm fingers graze along his jaw, teasing the stumble there and then fully cupping his cheeks. He can feel Fernando's breath shudder over his face and then the light press of their lips. The warmth and honest leaves a flutter in his chest and he hovers his hands over Fernando's arms, grazing his knuckles over the fabric.
He keeps his eyes closed the entire time, because he knows Fernando has been wanting to do this for a long, long time.
Fernando pulls back but goes back again, but with much more confidence. Their tongues tease and their lips numb and every time Sergio inhales his chest gets thicker. Fernando wraps his arms around his neck and they melt against each other. Kissing in the dim light lobby where anyone could come in and take picture of them, but as of this moment, they don't give a damn. Sergio has waited long enough for this, has waited for Fernando.
His fingers are tangled in Sergio's hair and they're smiling into their kisses now.
Enjoying this moment because this is the time they have left before reality takes over. For now, it's just them two.
They pull back several times, promising themselves no more, no more-but they end up kissing again and again, and again.
“feliz cumpleaños, serge.” Fernando mumbles in between.
“you too.” Sergio kisses back.
Again, and again.
