Prompt: Resistance

“Don”

“Don”

‘Is there an echo? Where is that coming from?’

“Don, you have to relax. You’re going to hurt yourself.”

‘Wha? Not right … .’

“Don, come on, open you eyes. C’mon, you can do it, I know you can.”

‘I can’t breathe. Oh God, I’m dying. Not like this, not like this … .’

“DONNIE! Open your eyes now! Look at me. The nurse is trying to take the breathing tube out. C’mon Donnie, just open your eyes.”

‘Can’t … so tired … Dad … Charlie … .’

“He’s not making it easy. He needs to relax.”

“C’mon Don, you can do it.”

Prompt: Surface

“Don, that’s it. Good. Look at me. They’re going to take your breathing tube out. Okay? You need to just relax. That’s it.”

‘Dad, Charlie. What’s going on here. What’s this.’ Hiss thunk.

“Mr. Eppes, on the count of three, I want you to cough as hard as you can. Can you do that for me? Good.”

“Okay, one, two, three.”

“There, that’s it. It’s out. How are you feeling Mr. Eppes?”

“Hurt. Hurt all over.” Don’s voice was raspy, harsh, foreign.

“Donnie. Oh God, Thank you.” Alan was too choked up to say anything more.

“Welcome back, Bro.”
