Ken stared at the candles intensely as if trying to blow them out with his eyes. There were four of them. This was in fact a symbolic grouping of candles, rather than a literal one- he was not four years old he was forty. God only knew how he had survived this long. After a hazardous youth as a Chosen Child he’d chosen an even more hazardous adulthood. Few days seemed to go by when he didn’t get shot at.
“Ken? Uh, hello?”
Ken blinked at the sound of Daisuke’s voice, and tried to clear the burned spots from his vision, and the dark thoughts from his head, for Daisuke’s sake.
“Is anybody else coming?” he asked in a low voice.
Daisuke shifted uncomfortably. “Well, they were all kinda busy, ya know. But everybody wishes you a happy birthday."
They were all busy. Technically even Ken was busy- he had a case file burning a hole in his desk at the station. Maybe it was a good thing no one else could come. It wasn’t as if they were avoiding him; he’d gotten an email from Hikari just that morning.
Anyway Ken’s dining room probably wasn’t big enough to hold anyone else; Daisuke, Veemon, Wormmon and himself were pretty well squeezed in. Miyako had taken the spacious dining room, and the nice chairs, and the kids, and his dignity....
“Are you alright Ken?” Wormmon asked him with the same concern that his guests were also showing.
He smiled. “I’m fine. Just making my wish.”
Ken blew out the candles.
