The Kaiser sat on his throne. Of course, he knew logically that he must really be sitting at home in front of his computer, but it all seemed so real.Since the day he’d first tried the game the genius that was sure of nearly everything had been mystified as to how someone could create such a rich virtual world at all, let alone with such a simple interface device.
What was is called? The d-pad? D-vice? D3. To enter the game you held it up to your computer; in all likelihood it interfaced wirelessly with your internet connection, and also, somehow, with your nervous system, manipulating what you saw and felt. He shuddered inwardly at the thought that the D3 might be extending little wire tendrils into his hand or something. But there were never any marks when he came out.
Many times he’d been on the verge of taking the little device apart to see how it worked, but every time he’d stopped short, once with screwdriver touching screw, and put it down. What if he couldn’t put it back together again? Then he would lose his little kingdom.
He didn’t know why the place was empty of other players, either. Was it an abandoned beta? Or not yet ready for testing? He hardly even knew how he’d come to have the interface key. He had tried every method he could think of to find out who the coders were, to no avail.
So after a while he’d decided for once in his life to forget the ‘how’ and ‘why.’ He would find out one day but until then it was simply his own private digital
