At it's most basic level, a computer is a machine that does just that - computer. In it's most early incarnations a computer was used to do complicated calculations that would be difficult or impossible to do by hand. However, as they've developed, they've become effective and useful for other purposes, as well as developing graphical interfaces, so that even the common person can use them easily!
