I feel your pain. I felt like stabbing myself repeatedly for joining both sites (which i even forgot my myspace password so screw that) and a couple of my old friends won't correspond through normal means like email or AIM.
that said, if i was in your position, i would join. for the media files. because that's kind of what i did. >.>
I was in your shoes once. I hated myspace but eventually got one. Then I hated facebook but eventually got one of those too. But to be honest, it's one of the best ways to keep in touch with some of my friends because it seems like everyone has one. I say go for it.
Well it's a little different because people can't really see your messages or comments or anything unless you friend them. So it's a little more private than myspace.
And I'd stay away from people from the past. Unless it's someone uber cool, like me.

from what i understand, though, it's easy to keep in touch because you can find anyone as long as you know their name.
there are some ghosts from my past that i'm not sure i'm willing to risk digging up >.>
