I'm almost done reading Deadhouse Gates, the second book of the Malazan Book of the Fallen series by Steven Erikson. These books are incredibly detailed, gritty, original fantasy - my only real problem with the series so far is that it bogs down occasionally. Lately I've tended to have a hard time diving into books like that that start off by just throwing a ton of stuff at me that I don't understand... I do like intricate books with twisty parts that I don't see coming, though.

One of my current favorite authors is Alastair Reynolds. He writes big thick books with lots of parts that very slowly come together into an awesomely intricate crescendo, but he's also good at starting off in a way that doesn't overwhelm me.

I've looked at a few by Reynolds before, but haven't actually picked any up. I'll give him a look, based on that recommendation. Much as I'm enjoying Erikson, his writing style can be off-putting.
