Magazine suggestions?

My husband has gotten into digital SLR photography lately and really enjoys researching lenses and techniques. He is leaving for Afghanistan in a few weeks and probably won't have the time or internet capabilities to look at camera things like he does while he's home. There's Popular Photography, Shutterbug, Outdoor Photography, and the like, but honestly many of those are merely glorified commercials for gear and software, or are glorified how-to magazines.

If you want magazines that are actually useful and are about the photography itself instead of the gear, I recommend American Photo, and Digital Photo Pro isn't bad either. Both are bimonthly and their subscriptions are inexpensive. Photo District News isn't bad either. The granddaddy of them all is Aperture, but it is the most expensive at $50/year and is published only quarterly. However, it's the best for the deepest sort of artistic discussion and serious criticism.

I enjoy Outdoor Photographer but as the commenter above points out, it can be gear and technique heavy rather than talking about artistic or creative concepts. If he shoots a wide variety of subjects a more general magazine may be better though - OP is really all about the Landscapes and Nature.
