Still hear Dad’s gruff, tired, voice at the end of another hunt when I’d ask him for something Sammy and me needed.
First thing out of his mouth was usually, “Is it a want or a need, Dean?”
I got so tired of hearing those damn words. I know dad did the best he could. Or, at least, I used to believe that. Now I’m not so sure.
Why the hell was our needing clothes that fit, or warmer winter coats, not considered a god damned ‘need’? Why was I the one worrying about it in the first place instead of our fucking father?
When I could get him to agree to spending money on our stuff, it always came down to, “We’ve gotta keep our heads here, Dean. Innocents could die.”
Yeah? Well, guess what, Dad? I ‘wanted’ to understand your reasoning but I ‘needed’ to know you cared.
