Dublin Marathon 2016

A bit of background, in case you are a random stranger or live under a rock and haven’t heard me going on and on about this. Training for the Dublin Marathon had been going really well until the end of July and I was aiming for a time of 5 hours 30 (not fast, but good for a non-athletic person like me). Then disaster struck and I developed a ( Read more... )

It don't half bugger you up, a marathon! There's no shame in walking (unlike those who walk a 5K and seem to think they've done something amazing unless there are extenuating physical excuses!) and your time was actually pretty damned good really. You now know just how far 26.2 miles is (probably more like 27 miles due to not following the shortest route) and mental stuff is the biggest part of it so long as you can still actually move some limbs.

Total sod about your vaseline! I would have cried too. That was lovely of that person to walk with you, far more useful than the "Run XYZ Run" which just makes you want to hit people and change your name!!

As you say, you don't give up on stuff. No shit :D

Thank you! No shame in walking but I really wish I could have run it (or at least most of it - I always thought there would be some walking involved, but nowhere near this much). Still, that's what next time is for. And I will make sure my Vaseline is somewhere safer next time. I already learned not to put my name on my top and was very glad of that near the end! And never again will I do a marathon without proper training. I have proved I can do it, I don't need to keep on doing it ;)

You made the right call over being undertrained versus injury. I had to take a month out four months before due to getting pneumonia (because I tried to run through a bad cold) and didn't do nearly enough in the final month due to bad knee. My final time was a good 20-25% slower than I would have liked, but we both finished and that is all that matters!

As you say, you've proved you can do a marathon - you're officially a marathoner no matter what!!
