A/N: So I apparently started this fic last winter break and totally forgot about it. So I finished it up and, presented for your reading pleasure... my first Firefly fic!

Life is too damn short for ifs and maybes.

It’s something she’d heard from Mal. Aw hell, if she was being honest, it was something she’d eavesdropped on. It weren’t her fault that she was just... invested in the relationship between the captain and Inara - she loved ‘em both, Inara as her best friend and the captain as a slightly dense older brother who needed a lot of looking after (sort of like how River thought of Simon, she reckoned). Kaylee overheard a lot aboard Serenity, since she was just so damned curious ‘bout how the crew, her family, was doing.

Life is too damn short for ifs and maybes? That seemed to be what Zoe thought. All the crew had special places in Kaylee’s heart, but of Zoe and Wash, she weren’t gonna lie and say she couldn’t pick a favorite - Wash by a landslide. He could always make her laugh. But Kaylee sure saw Zoe’s heart break when Wash said he didn’t want to have a baby with her. And Kaylee wondered if Zoe weren’t doubting her own self, maybe, and her relationship with Wash.

Zoe was, as Wash liked to smilingly say when he’d had a bit too much engine wine, a warrior woman. Usually, Kaylee thought Zoe could take care of herself, and she surely didn’t think Wash would be the one to hurt her. But Kaylee sure saw Zoe was hurting, and Kaylee didn’t like to see nobody hurt.

“Wash?” Kaylee called, knocking on the doorframe as she entered the bridge. He sat alone at the controls, staring right pensively out into the black.

“Hello, Miss Kaylee,”

“I think you and Zoe should have you a baby. Life’s too damn short for ifs and maybes.”
