The first time it happened, the entire class noticed a change in the air. It was his turn to speak and he was feeling extremely nervous, he hated oral presentations because everybody will be staring at his face and he woke up with the biggest headache so he wasn't in the mood of embarrassing himself in front of the entire class.
"The next part," he began, "ummm... I will talk about... my part of the work is..." he was feeling ashamed, he prepared that introduction really well, what he was supposed to say? A few guys laughed at him and whispered things to each other. That was it, his head felt like it was filled with needles, every single one was trying to get out of his cranium and he was about to explode. He touched the side of his head with one hand trying to calm the pressure. When he felt the first needle practically getting out of his head he fell on his knees and heard a tremble under him. A few girls screamed, the teacher walked towards the emergency exit and opened it.
He felt a guy touching his arm, helping him to stand up. Everybody thought it was just good luck because classes ended early that day, he didn't want to think about it.
"Experts around Korea still looking for an explanation for today's earthquake", the guy from the news talked about a lot of things, 3.1 was the magnitude, in the Ritcher's scale, he said. The damages were minor, a few people in the hospital, they were scared, a few broken televisions, a few products fell down in the supermarkets, nothing was really serious. The experts said the epicenter was in Seoul, their sensors read energy liberations really near the surface, they read it above the surface. But this was impossible, they kept talking about a massive failure, because it was totally probable for all the machines to have the same failure at the same time. That was possible, things like that happened everyday.
His teachers talked about the implications of machines, suddenly his classmates where talking about The Matrix and he turned off his brain. No matter how many excuses he tried to give to himself, there was a small voice in the back of his brain who told him that he was the source of the energy liberation. It was impossible, but he felt something and... Every time that thought fought to be heard he suppressed it immediately because that was impossible and he was a boring guy with a boring life.
The second time it happened the calendar read August. He was on the street a few block away from his apartment. He bought kimchi and spaghetti because in his head he was a chef and his food was delicious, even if he was the only one eating it. Cooking for one every night.
He was really living in his head because he failed to hear the guys approaching. He didn't hear anything, he just felt the pain in his back when one of the guys hit him with something. His story with pain was a good and long one, he stopped his daily meeting with it when he left his house. He didn't know how to defend himself, he didn't know back then, he didn't know tonight. The pain in his back was nothing compared with the needles. He panicked, the bottle on his desk was just a reminder of how dangerous a headache could be. A reminder of his fear, a reminder of the possibility.
The sensation was there again, he could feel the hands of the guys in his pockets, he could feel how one of them took his bag, he could feel how one of the needles was trying to be free. He screamed this time, the pain was too much, the vibration of the earth above him was too much, the guys were scared. The wall from the building right beside him couldn't resist the movement and then one of the guys screamed under a big piece of cement.
He didn't eat that night. He didn't eat the next day nor the day after that. 6.1 was the magnitude, a few people in the hospital with minor injuries, a few televisions were on the floor, more job for the guy in the supermarket. This time the experts talked about sabotage because the lectures didn't make sense. The energy came from the center of Seoul, from the surface. A guy from a night program started to talk about aliens, a few guys in the subway were talking about the end of the world. His aunt called him, she wanted to know if everything was okay. His uncle sent extra money just in case and he asked him to buy more food because he was sure a bigger earthquake was on his way.
He didn't leave his house for the entire week. This guy he was supposed to work in a project with called him on Saturday. They really needed to talk about it. Just because of him, he went out again.
He was scared all the time, the voice in his brain was the only thing he heard. Coincidences were for fools, the facts were screaming at his face, he was screwed, he didn't understand it but he was screwed. He avoided every stressful situation, every weird environment, he avoided to go out when wasn't necessary. He was thinner, weaker.
The owner of the building he live in knocked on his door one Sunday. Apparently the neighbors called him because the kid from 302C was acting weird and the didn't want weird in his building. The owner, a police officer and a dog entered to the apartment, they were looking for drugs. His uncles payed a lot of money for this apartment, he payed a lot of money for college and he payed a lot of attention to him because his parents failed in the love department and his aunt and uncle said he was such a good boy. He could have said the owner to fuck off but what was the point? He let the dog go to his bedroom, smell under his bed, he let the police officer open his fridge and he let them look under every carpet of his home. The owner gave him a million excuses and he said sorry a hundred times because he also knew he was a good boy.
He woke up one day, it was almost February, a normal Tuesday that felt different. He called his aunt a week ago and asked her to visit him. She noticed how bad he looked, she said goodbye whispering really close to his ears about how no girl was worth his health, she even say if it was a boy he wasn't worth neither. His aunt didn't know he was breaking up with himself. He didn't want to be afraid anymore.
A few Tuesdays before he started to feel little tremors under his feet. The headaches faded away shortly after. A few months later, there where not headaches anymore, just a little buzz in his head and the familiar pain of his imaginary needles breaking free. He managed to speak in front of the class and not make a fools of himself, nobody notice how the floor growled when he started to talk. He was still afraid of a sudden emotion splitting his soul in two but he was a little happier, a little stronger and a he wasn't a bag of bones anymore. He even cooked for himself again.
His peace came to an end that afternoon, he was in the library, looking for a book when a hand touch his shoulder. It feels like fire and electricity, like fly and swim, like scream and sing. The bookshelf in front of him payed the price, a little crack in the floor was the only evidence, he closed it with a smooth movement of his hand, he learned to do that looking at his apartment walls. The floor was a little uneven because lets face it, he wasn't an expert yet.
"Easy," the boy behind him said, "I should know better than sneak on you like this." He finished talking mostly to himself. "You could turn around if you want" the stranger said a few seconds later, "I'm Kai and you need to turn around for us to have a proper conversation."
How he was supposed to turn around if the guy was there and he was there and the floor was uneven and he was really bad at first impressions. He gripped the book he had in his hand, his knuckles were white and he was feeling one of those fucking needles trying to kill him.
"I will... come back later," the guy talked again. He noticed the guy waiting a few seconds, after leaving. He wonder if the guy was waiting for him to be a normal person, as normal as he could be, of course. He knew he was bad with people but that was ridiculous. The guy... Kai, needed to tell him something, maybe his pants were ripped and the entire campus could see his underwear... wrong day to feel like a superhero. He recovered control over his body and checked himself out looking for something embarrassing. The guy, Kai, said he will come back later, he told himself because there were no reason to freak out.
Kai didn't look for him that week nor the next. He didn't look for him the next month, three months later the guy was just a memory. He started to think if part of his abnormality was driving him crazy, maybe he imagine everything. He even thought about going to the psychology building in his college and ask a few questions, nothing compromising. His intentions died when a really concerned guy with red hair and dashing smile tried to touch his arm and asked his phone number.
It was July when he was walking in the park and heard the guy again. He frozen again and decided to sit in a bench, the guy was behind him again and he couldn't make himself turn around. He tried to hear his voice again. He wasn't brave enough to look at his face, he didn't even know how he looked like. It wasn't a secret, he accepted he has a little crush on the mysterious stranger with the magical touch. He dismissed it because of reasons... the guy disappeared, he freak Kai out, he tried being in a relationship before... a few times... not a single good idea.
When Kai spoke again, even if he didn't hear what he was saying exactly; he couldn't help the tremor under his feet. It was too late when the little shake made a old woman jump besides him. He felt his ears burn and he thought about being an idiot because who couldn't know he was behind mother nature dance steps.
He was trying to relax again when he hear the same voice speaking to his ear, really close. He jump, letting another needle free. "Easy," the boy said again, just like the first time. He heard him walking around the bench and he saw a pair of red shoes in front of him, long legs connected the feet to a thin torso. He wonder if Kai work out, he delete the question the moment he thought about it. It was time to look up because he wasn't checking the guy out, he wasn't.
With a quick movement, to quick for his neck to adjust properly. He looked directly at the estranger face. "You look," he started, failing to notice he was actually talking out loud; "different." Just when he finish his sentence he realized his behavior and tried to make it sound less bizarre because he didn't want the guy to know he imagine his face a few dozens of times after their first meeting. "Because, you don't look like a creeper. I mean, you don't look weird. Wait, you look weird." He was stuttering like hell at that point but his ability doesn't include a filter and he was an idiot. "What I mean is," he tried again, looking how the guy was starting to smile at him with curious eyes, "you looked different in my head".
Yes, he said that. He was the creeper and the weirdo.
"We are going to pretend we never talked to each other before, okay?" Kai said, a smile playing in his lips. He just nodded and fixed his shirt and his sweater. "I'm going to count to three and we are going to have a proper conversation. One..." Kai was looking directly at him and his eyes were beautiful. "Two," his lips were full and he tried not to imagine anything because he didn't want to give the experts another sleepless night. His mind took a trip to the gutter while the earth shook for the third time this afternoon. "Easy, " Kai said again, like he knew the origin of the little tremors. Impossible. "Three," he said at last, "I'm Kai."
This was his chance, his second chance. "Kyungsoo," he said quietly, looking at the gorgeous guy in front of him. It felt like a lifetime later but he was finally going to he know what the guy wanted from him. His heart was hitting his ribs without mercy, when suddenly a skinny boy, younger than him ran towards them and took Kai's hand, interlacing his fingers with a familiarity that broke Kungsoo's heart and kill all the needles in his head.
"Not now," Kai said to the boy, "I'm trying to be professional here." The boy laughed at him and a light breeze moved his hair making him look flawless. Kungsoo saw when both boys looked at him at the same time, both of them were giving him a smile. He returned it knowing he must look stupid. "Go on," the guy said looking at Kai,"be professional quickly. I want an ice cream."
Kai rolled his eyes, "Sehun, stop being a brat, we need to do, I need to do this right," he turned to Kungsoo and took a card from his pocket giving it to the boy. He took it and look at both guys again. "We are a organization, kind of a society, a refuge, a safe house, a place to talk... Are you getting the point?" he said to Kungsoo. The boy wasn't getting any points and was frankly confused. "Boys like us, sometimes need a getaway, a shoulder, a bed. Better?"
Boy like them? Kyungsoo almost asked if he was referring to disgustingly handsome boys like he and Sehun, but his brain was on alert, the needles where moving like crazy and he knew he was talking about something else, something he was too afraid to confront. He stood up leaving a crack where his shoes were and walked quickly leaving little stones dancing behind him.
He arrived to his apartment and for the first time in years closed all the windows, turned off all the lights. He was relieved but scared at the same time, he wasn't alone but... he wasn't alone. His body or mind or soul was producing little tremors. Too small to scare his neighbors but big enough to be felt by him. A knock on the door made him jump, he tried to be quiet for the person to leave.
"Good job, Kai," a new voice said outside the apartment, "Yes, I'm in front of his apartment," he continued. His voice was familiar but not enough to made him open the door. "Kyungsoo?" the new guy said, he waited him to answer for a few seconds. A few minutes later he walked towards the door slowly, trying to figure out if the guy was still there. "Kyungsoo?", the voice said again, making the boy froze in the middle of his own room. "I'm Suho," the voice said a few seconds later, "I mean no harm," he continued. Kungsoo was waiting the guy to keep talking but instead he heard the guy sliding against his door and he could almost hear Suho sitting in the floor outside his apartment.
He decided to sit in the floor in the middle of his living room because it was a long day and he was tired and the sweet voice of the guy outside his apartment was talking to him and promising a world without loneliness.
