a great day for trans rights, cynicism, or possibly both

In (queer) media coverage following the Zapata trial conviction, the pretty blonde anchor who blinked too much was saying, "You know, [token trans woman], I've thought long and hard about this case, as many people have, and I guess one of the reasons why it's so moving to me is, I think, boy, what privileges I have as a person who is not ( Read more... )

Did you intend for this to imply that Tyra Banks, Diane Sawyer and Oprah are trans? I read that and chuckled.

I dunno that it's all pity-based. Everybody is ignorant about things until they learn. Where they go from there is usually what makes the difference.

Also, how you been? LJ is mostly dead for everyone these days.

Nah, they're not trans, but they've all had their requisite Very Special Trans stuff in the past couple years. And it's not all bad; my grandparents came around from ambivalence to comfort with my identity partly because of Oprah. Plus, I love the useless bubblegum that is America's Next Top Model.

I'm tired of doing and seeing "Trans 101" stuff. I see why it's good and necessary, but that doesn't stop it from being tired, boring, and annoying at times to my eyes.

And I'm mostly good. You coming to the Kotei down here in Northern Virginia? Because if you are, could you bring a deck for me? I live ten minutes away from the store and would love to play.

Hehe gotcha. I'm sure I'd be bored if it was Alcoholism 101 time and time again, too.

Yeah, I definitely can bring you something. I'll try to find one that's got a short learning curve (probably Unicorn, unless I'm playing ponies).

we had a trans-panel at school the other day, and a fairly big turnout was there. THAT was what i was most impressed with. there was a gender-queer person, a transwoman, a transman, and a just beginning hormones 50something transwoman (former addict, possibly on Government Assistance)...

so this was promised as 'not just another trans101 discussion' but it turned out to be. i'm not sure WHAT to expect from trans panels that claim to be 'beyond trans 101' but are for the general 'health practitioner' public. i felt like it was a waste of my time, and the questions (while written in the spirit of moving beyond trans 101 stuff) were answered in very vague terms...the things that seemed to be most important were that 1. a lot of people came to learn. 2. mostly what we learned was that these people are PEOPLE first, trans second. not ALL of their issues are going to be around trans stuff...

i dunno..i'm so over trans 101 stuff...
