MS Word problem

It seems I can no longer open Word docs that are e-mailed to me. When I open a Word attachment, Word pops up and it appears everything is OK, but as soon as it's done doing what it needs to do, I always end up with a one-page blank doc, even if said attachment is supposed to be 300+ pages. Are they using Office '07? That may be why, if there's a version problem between the file types.

I'm not sure which version of Office they're using. I've actually had the same problem with two different clients. With the most recent occurrence, the client used Word '98, and she had saved it as an RTF. I'm also pretty sure Jason and I have the same version of Word and Office, but I can always open the docs on his computer.
