I'm just about to hit my six-month mark at Whole Foods. That means I'm up for a small raise, which is lovely. It doesn't inherently mean that I'm up for an upgrade to a wholly different employment status ... but that happened anyway. I've been working 35ish hours per week for the entire six months, and just a couple days ago, the local ( Read more... )

I am glad things are going well. Being deliberately cheerful usually makes me more depressed. I am glad it is different for you.

Yah ... deliberate cheer definitely hasn't given me what I would have expected. It tires me out most of the time, it doesn't make me feel fake or disconnected, it props up my mood some but not tons ... it's rather strange even now to be getting such an unexpected and middle-of-the-road internal reaction.

Yeah, what makes me more depressed is feeling fake and disconnected. Also, I identify as introverted and it forces me to interact with people who I don't want to interact with. (Sit me in a corner doing a mind-numbing repetive task any day and I will be happy. Hey, that is actually what I am doing right now. When I am less depressed I actually spend a good deal less time around people than when I am on the verge of a mental breakdown which has lead to some interesting conversations with therapists who assume that if I have a healthy social life therefore I must be healthy otherwise.)

I can see the deliberately cheerful thing though. That makes a lot of sense. There have been jobs where I have had to force myself to be chearful and that helped with depression.

That's great! I mean, Well Done, and yeah, it kinda sounds you've got something there and CS wants to keep you around front. I also wonder, if it's that easy to get fired in that department, what their employee turnover is like compared to the rest of the store-maybe they're struggling with retention in that area and the manager is hoping to keep more of the people who are both competent and comfortable with the position working in that area? Too many noob cashiers probably doesn't help customer perceptions and feedback on their overall shopping experience, whereas people doing stocking could come and go all year and have little or no effect on how well-run the place seems to a customer. Just a thought.

That's what one would think, yes, but I'm told that the problem of high cashier turnover is local to neither this store nor this period. I'm sure some of that is just from high turnover in retail generally. But it seems like more of it is due to a Whole Foods policy ... one that could use some attention before CS hemmorhages away any more valuable and valued workers.

Hey, nice! I'm glad you're reasonably content with what you've got, AND that they're recognizing you as awesome.

Wow, modern technology is great. You've got internet while you're on the road. =)

Yes, I got it, and I'm very sorry I missed you! I would have loved to see you one more time before you left. We need to examine the doorbell 'cos it didn't go off at all inside. I hadn't even noticed the RPG books were missing, but I'm really glad to have the novel back. Um, the book of tests wasn't mine, although anotherjen and I are enjoying it while it's here. (It's kinda forced me to admit I'm intelligent.) If you find out whose it is, I'll try to arrange re-delivery.
