There's settings to change your entire system to dark mode, as well as Word. I assume you use a Windows system: Select Start > Settings > Personalization > Colors > Choose your mode > Dark
In Word: File > Account > Office Theme > Black
This way, it's set, and you don't have to change individual documents.
I will say, though, that dark mode may feel more comfortable compared to the glaring white background, but it causes eyes to dilate to see better; they struggle with the dark. At the same time, I'll typically go for a dark mode or at least darker, because I am light sensitive and get headaches. If it works for you, that's the important thing.
