In my experience cats tend to be natural born keyboard players, but consider tambourines to be hostile predators, possibly related to genus "vacuum cleaner." I've found cats respond best to my guitar playing, although I suppose that's true of mammals in general.

My cats don't mind the vacuum cleaner. In fact they have had to be moved out of the way and the Rumba would bump into them. They also will sniff power tools while running.

I know they are not deaf because they come when called by name and can hear the refrigerator door being opened from anywhere in the house.

they aint right, but I love them anyway.

one of my cats seems to really like the sound of my harmonium, as he goes out of his way to come sit next to me when i'm playing it.

I haven't been doumbeking much since I adopted Moe Moe. He doesn't startle easily, and he can sleep through music and through dogs barking, but bunnies warn each other of danger by THUMPING their big ol' back feet loudly. I worry that I drum, he'll think I'm trying to tell him that a predator's coming to eat him.

Dashi likes to be whistled to, and he also likes the sound C's laptop makes when he closes it and both the microphone and the speakers are turned on (kind of whistley feedback, not too loud)

Otto likes Tortoise. A LOT.
