where would you suggest to begin actions that may actually have an impact on society?

You're right, at this point nothing will be accomplished without action. Except, don't minimalize the significance of voting, and passive resistance - in a healthy, functioning republic these work. Furthermore, the coffee shops are important too. Where else would the liberals form and consolidate their opinions? Conversation is essential for change to occur. But I'm in agreement that when all else fails and the politicians refuse to listen, you take it to the streets. The only problem I could see with the approach is that it may get out of hand, and degenerate into violence. Eh, Southpark is on. Guess I'm done with my rambling.
