A knock at the door startled Wooyoung, arousing him from his slumber.
'Who is it?' He wondered, throwing off the blanket.
Blanket?
Wooyoung held it in his hand, wondering where the sheet had come from. The knock came again as he got from the couch slowly, walking on his heels. He was suddenly pushed back into his living room and pinned against the wall.
"It's Victoria." Nichkhun whispered in a panic.
Wooyoung raised a brow. "So?"
"She's knows! She knows I'm here!"
The younger boy rolled his eyes as he pushed away from Nichkhun. He slowly hobbled his way to the door as she knocked again.
"I'm coming!"
Wooyoung glanced behind him, waving his hand for Nichkhun to stay out of sight. When the older boy ducked behind the wall, Wooyoung opened the door. He shivered as a cool breeze drifted in.
"H-hello." The female voice said.
"Hi."
"I... I heard you were on sick leave at work."
Wooyoung frowned. "Yeah?"
"I-I made you something. Do you mind... If I warm it up for you?"
The small boy sighed. "Victoria... Why are you really here?"
"I heard you were sick."
"From who?"
"F-from... Someone Junho knows."
"Someone I know?"
"I think his name is Chansung."
He rolled his eyes again. He bet they were talking with Chansung when he let slip that Wooyoung was on sick leave. He also bet Victoria didn't believe that.
"I'm not sick with a cold. I can make food on my own thanks."
"O-oh... Then... Why are you home?"
Wooyoung glared at the young woman. "I hurt my feet and can't walk. Wanna see?"
Victoria shook her head. "N-no that's fine! Uh... How did you..?"
"I dropped some glass and stepped on it. You wanna see the broken pieces incase you don't believe me?"
"My god Wooyoung no I believe you. I-I guess you shouldn't be on your feet."
"No, I shouldn't. You should go home."
Victoria handed Wooyoung a bag.
"No, give it to Junho. I'm sure he'd appreciate it more."
She took it back, staring at the ground.
"Wooyoung... He's not coming back, is he?"
Wooyoung sighed. "I told you that before didn't I? If you hadn't hounded him like you did...."
Victoria suddenly looked at him with tears in her eyes.
"Go... I'm sure Junho is wondering where you are."
Victoria nodded, turning and leaving. Wooyoung closed the door and made his way back to the living room, Nichkhun sat on the couch with his head in his hands.
"She still wants to know where I am... Even though she's with someone else..."
"Of course she does." Wooyoung stood at the end of the couch. "Wouldn't you wonder where she was if she suddenly left?"
Nichkhun suddenly stood up. "I should go."
"Go where?"
The older boy blinked.
"You can't run to her now Nichkhun... It'll only start trouble again especially now that she's been here and I've lied to her."
"Y-yeah but I..."
"Still love her?"
"S-she obviously doesn't love Junho if she keeps looking for me... I should go tell him."
"Stupid! Junho was a guy from work right?! Seeing as how he knows Victoria, he probably heard the rumors about you and me, and then when you leave, he goes after your girlfriend?! He doesn't give a damn about you! So why would he listen to you?!"
Wooyoung wobbled on his heels. "You can't expect me to believe you'd be leaving this house to go tell him that, do you? I know you want to go see her..."
The smaller boy stumbled backwards, his arms flailing to grab something before he fell but Nichkhun moved quickly, capturing Wooyoung in his arms.
"I do want to see her... But I want to stay with you."
Wooyoung sighed, looking away from the older boy as Nichkhun held him tight. "Listen... You walk back into her life... You're walking out of mine. I can't stand to see you get hurt when you're with her. If I was out of your life, she wouldn't have to accuse you of cheating."
The younger boy pushed away from Nichkhun. "I'm going to my room..."
He slowly made his way to the stairs, moving up them backwards because it was the only way. If he had walked up forwards on his heels, he would've had a greater chance of falling. He rubbed his eyes, looking at the clock. He wondered how it had gotten so late already. He left the light on as he rolled on to the bed.
Wooyoung felt like Victoria as he remembered back to when she burst through the door. She had also given Nichkhun the same choice between herself and Wooyoung. It pained him to make Nichkhun choose between them again. As of that moment the older boy wasn't attached to either of them. It was obvious Nichkhun was now Victoria's ex-boyfriend. He knew that she would dump Junho in a heartbeat if Nichkhun came back to her. It made him wonder if Victoria was even worth it in the first place. He knew she wasn't a bad person, or atleast until the whole 'cheating' fiasco came up.
He sighed, shaking his head and rubbing his face against the pillow. Was he really prepared to accept it and continue living if Nichkhun walked out on his life once again? It took him weeks to get out of his slump before... What would happen now?
"Wooyoung?"
Nichkhun's voice startled him but he refused to turn over.
"What is it?"
He heard the creak of the floor as the older boy approached the bed. His bed dipped as Nichkhun got to his knees next to it.
"I can't..."
'Here it comes.' Wooyoung thought, trying to quickly think of a response to make the older boy leave.
"I can't leave you."
The younger boy's eyes widened as he turned over.
"I can't leave you Wooyoung."
It shocked him more and more as he looked into Nichkhun's eyes.
"I don't want to leave you."
Tears suddenly grew in the older boy's eyes as they rolled down his cheeks.
"I don't... I can't... I love you..."
Wooyoung felt his heart stop. "What?"
"I love you. I love you Jang Wooyoung. I..."
The smaller boy pressed his finger to Nichkhun's lips. He blinked, his eyes moving from side to side. This wasn't what he was expecting, this wasn't even close. He was actually pretty positive the older boy would leave him. The scenario of Nichkhun actually staying wasn't even computing.
"Wooyoung..." The older boy breathed against his finger.
Wooyoung felt his heart start up again as the beats were too fast for him to count. Nichkhun bit his lip, bowing his head before looking back up and straight into the smaller boy's eyes.
"Victoria's accusations weren't exactly wrong."
The younger boy inhaled, holding his breath.
"I... I realized I liked spending time with you. You always made me happy no matter how difficult the situation I was in. Whenever I was upset you..." Nichkhun sighed. "Victoria wasn't like that. If I had a problem, so did she but hers were ten times worse. You always listened to me and gave me advice. W-when... When your girlfriend left you and I saw how much pain you were in... I just wanted to hold you. I wanted to give some kind of pill that would make you forget that woman was even in your life."
Wooyoung swallowed his breath. He didn't know what to say, he didn't know what to do. Nichkhun suddenly confessing was not in his mind at all. He now felt awkward as the older boy stared at him, almost as if he was waiting for a reply. What was a good reply?
I love you?
No...
I'm sorry but...
He tensed, almost regretting his mind saying it. He jumped when Nichkhun lightly touched his hand.
"You don't have to say anything now... You just wanted to know who my choice was between you and Victoria. It's you. Just so you know."
The older boy got up, patting Wooyoung's hand as he turned to leave the room.
"Wait!" Wooyoung called, closing his eyes tight and mentally calling himself an idiot. "Don't leave..."
He wasn't sure why but he didn't want to leave the older boy alone. He called Nichkhun towards his bed.
"Is it okay if I sleep with you?"
The smaller boy's eyes widened as he swallowed.
"I mean sleep... Like real sleep."
Wooyoung nodded, watching as Nichkhun rolled into bed next to him. The older boy turned off the light and Wooyoung laid down. It was quiet, other than the sound of breathing from the two boys.
"W-Wooyoung?"
"Mm?"
"Can I... Touch you?"
All the younger boy could do was squeak until Nichkhun pulled him close, wrapping his arms around the smaller boy and pressing his head to Wooyoung's chest. Wooyoung felt his heartbeat slow. He lifted his hands, awkwardly stroking Nichkhun's head. The older boy held him tightly, causing Wooyoung to pause and just rest his hands on the taller boy.
He closed his eyes, almost wishing that it was all a dream.
~
Wooyoung was in a dark room, or hell, it might've been a dark town for all he knew. The only light was a spotlight that shone over a rope that seemed to lead up into the sky. He approached the rope, suddenly discovering that it was too high for him to reach so he got on his toes. He waved his fingers around but he was still not close enough. He sighed, looking around for something to stand on. Nothing appeared around him but this rope under the spotlight.
He hunched down really low and sprang up, trying to grab at the rope. He swore then that the rope had moved. He was positive that when he jumped he would reach it.
"What are you doing?" A voice suddenly asked.
"Trying to reach this rope."
"Why?"
"I want to know what's up there."
"But why?"
Wooyoung blinked, feeling like the voice was asking too many questions.
"I don't know. Because it's dark down here?"
"And you want to be in the light?"
"Of course I do."
"Why?"
Wooyoung frowned. "Because I don't like the dark."
"Sometimes the dark isn't such a bad place. The dark has no worries, no thoughts or care. The dark... It doesn't judge. It doesn't make you feel insecure or embarrassed. It lets you be who you want to be."
"And the light?"
"The light exposes you, it shows your bad sides... It shows you your weakness... Your jealously. It puts you in an awkward spot."
Wooyoung bit his lip. "But I can handle that."
"Can you? Do you have enough confidence? Can you really face the truth and questions that are out there and give it answers?"
Wooyoung blinked. "I think so."
"Thinking won't help you up there."
"Then yes." He said angrily. "I can handle it."
"Well, it's much better down here. But if you really insist on going up there, I guess I'll help you." The voice suddenly stepped out of the shadows, revealing it's face.
Nichkhun smiled as he walked towards Wooyoung. "Here, take my hand."
Wooyoung blinked, staring at the boy's hand.
"It's okay, you can trust me. You have confidence right?"
Wooyoung nodded.
"Then take my hand."
He inhaled as he reached out, placing his hand in Nichkhun's. The walls suddenly crashed in around them and the rope fell from the sky.
"I thought you were going to help me out?!"
"Have confidence!" Nichkhun said as Wooyoung's vision suddenly faded.
~
Wooyoung sat up quickly, panting as his heart raced. He looked around the room in a panic, closing his eyes and pressing his hand to his sweaty forehead. He was back in his room, the daylight shinning in and welcoming him to the morning. The dream had felt so vivid... He felt like there was a message the voice was trying to tell him... Voice.
He looked around the room, suddenly noticed Nichkhun was no where to be seen. His heart raced again as he wondered if it really had been a dream but how far back did he go? Was it when Nichkhun was inhabiting his living room? Wooyoung wiggled his toes. No pain. He bit his lip, not believing it for a second as he brought his foot up, ripping off his sock.
"How do they look?"
Wooyoung jumped, almost having a heartattack as Nichkhun approached him.
"You okay?" The older boy asked, setting a mug down on the nightstand and sitting on the bed.
The younger boy swallowed as he nodded. "Bad dream... I..." His eyes scanned the older boy's face. "Nothing..."
"So.. How's your feet?"
"They don't seem to hurt when I move my toes."
Nichkhun smiled. "Well that's a start. It's been a week and a half. Here, I made you some coffee. Well, I would've made you tea but all you had was this coffee."
"Mm... Chansung got me into coffee."
"Who?"
"Just a friend."
"Oh." The older boy handed Wooyoung the mug.
"Thanks."
The boys sat in awkward silence as Wooyoung sipped his coffee.
"L-listen Wooyoung... If... If it makes you feel awkward you can forget about what I said."
"I can't forget you idiot... Just... Give me time to think about it."
~
Over the next few days, Wooyoung noticed Nichkhun's change in attitude. The older boy seemed to be happier as he helped Wooyoung around the house, making meals and helping the younger boy up and down the stairs. At times though he could sense the taller boy force his smile. It made Wooyoung wonder if he was doing this to show the younger boy that he was really okay with leaving Victoria behind. Or maybe it was just because he still needed time to adjust to his new life of actually being happy.
"Here try this." The older boy came at Wooyoung with piping hot food between his chopsticks.
"Aah!" The younger boy tried to move away.
"Eat it before I drop it in your lap!"
Wooyoung took the bit into his mouth, breathing with his mouth open to try to get the food to cool off. He chewed finally and swallowed.
"Well?"
"It's good."
Nichkhun smiled before he pranced off into the kitchen. Wooyoung laughed, shaking his head. He inhaled but choked, coughing up a storm. He hobbled his way to the kitchen, leaning over the counter that separated it from the living room.
"Oh my god Wooyoung!"
The younger boy let his head fall onto the counter.
"Here here! Drink this!"
Nichkhun handed him a glass of water, pulling the smaller boy's head up. "Breathe! Then take a sip."
Wooyoung did so, swallowing the gulp of water and exhaling. He panted as he leaned against the counter, half laying on it.
"You okay?" The older boy asked, lightly stroking the smaller boy's head.
Wooyoung nodded as he sniffled. "Fine." He wheezed.
"Was it the food?"
He shook his head.
"Because... We don't have to eat it..."
"The food is fine."
~
"You really scared me there Wooyoung... When you came into the kitchen coughing like that."
"I think my spit got caught in my throat as I breathed in."
Nichkhun laughed. "Trying to swallow too much?"
"Maybe..."
"Wooyoung..." The older boy moved close to Wooyoung on the couch. "Don't take what you can't handle."
"What?"
Nichkhun leaned back. "Don't take what you can't handle."
The smaller boy's eyes moved from Nichkhun to the floor. "I can handle it."
The older boy laughed. "I don't think you can."
"I can handle it.
"Okay. Sure."
"I can handle it."
Nichkhun raised a brow. "...Wooyoung?"
The younger boy shook his head, keeping his eyes glued to the floor. "I can handle it. I have confidence."
"You... Have confidence in swallowing?"
Wooyoung shook his head, looking at the taller boy. "I..." He smiled. "I've got it."
"I don't know what you're talking about Wooyoung."
