Chega de Saudade

Music: Antonio Carlos Jobim
Lyrics: Vinícius de Moraes
English lyrics (No More Blues): Jon Hendricks and Jessie Cavanaugh

English Translation

Go away sadness, and tell her
It's impossible without her
Tell her in a prayer, wish that she comes back
Because I can't suffer anymore

Enough with the longing, the truth is, without her
There is no peace, no beauty
There's only sadness and melancholy
Which won't leave me, won't leave me, won't leave

But, if she returns, if she returns
What a lovely thing, what a crazy thing
'Cause there are less little fish swimming in the sea
Than the little kisses that I'll give on her lips

In my arms, the hugs
The hugs must be millions of hugs
Tight like this, glued like this, silent like this
Hugs and kisses and affection with no end

Which is to end this thing of you living far from me
I don't want more of this thing of you living like this
Let's leave this thing of you living without me

Original Lyrics

Vai, minha tristeza, e diz a ela

Apertado assim, colado assim, calado assim
Abraços e beijinhos e carinhos sem ter fim

Que é pra acabar com esse negócio de viver longe de mim
Não quero mais esse negócio de você viver assim
Vamos deixar desse negócio de você viver sem mim

No More Blues (English Lyrics)

No more blues
I'm going back home
No more blues
I promise no more to roam
Home is where the heart is
The fun and parties
My heart's been right there all along
No more fears
And no more sighs
No more tears
I've said my last good-byes
If trouble beckons me I swear I'm going to refuse
I'm going to settle down
There'll be no more blues

Everyday when I am far away
My thoughts turn homeward, forever homeward
I've travelled round this world in search of happiness
But all the happiness I found was in my hometown

No more blues
I'm going back home
No more blues
I'm through with all my wanderings
Now I'll settle down and never roam
Find a man and make a home
When we settle down
There'll be no more blues
Nothing but happiness
When we settle down
There'll be no more blues

Dioneo's note: This song is considered the first Bossa Nova song. It was popularized by João Gilberto. The English version keeps in the rhyme and rhythm of the song, giving it a new meaning, different from the original poem by Vinícius de Moraes, as is the case with many other Brazilian songs.

The word "saudade" doesn't have an exact match in the English vocabulary. It can be loosely translated as "missing someone", but it's more about the pain of being away from something. Some native Portuguese speakers told me that this word is unique to their language, but at least one other language I know, Bahasa Indonesia, has the appropriate word to translate this sentiment, that is "rindu".
